The “What Wilton Said” Band’s instrument list

Here is list of some of the equipment that Wilton Said used on stage live when they performed at this years Nuance 2008.

Here’s a list of some of the equipment of myself and the band members.

  • Wilton – Keyboards – Roland EP7 Digital Piano, Roland Sound Canves, Roland PC-70 Controller. Guitars – Lado Halk with Kayler floating Bridbe. Both have Semour Duncun distortion pick ups. Roland Jazz Chorus 77 Amp. Variety of boss pedals.
  • Chris Reid – Guitar: was playing a Gibson SG Deluxe with the Bigsby style Maestro bridge, a Traynor Custom Valve 40 amp, and effects: Dual Overdrive, Cry Baby Wah, Volume fade pedal, Delay, Tremelo, Flanger and Chorus pedals. The pedals are Boss, except for the flanger (Ibanez) and of course the wah. I also used an E-bow in a few parts.
  • Frank Heisler Bass: Music Man Stingray 5 fretless
    Amp: Euphonic Audio iAmp350 350 watt amp with a CXL-112 1×12 with a coaxial
    horn tweeter within.
    The rig provides a suitable level of power and growl while weighing under 60 pounds!
    …and then there’s the ubiquitous music stand..
  • Richard Rizzo – Drums (don’t know)

Now the amplifier that Wilton himself uses is really a thing to behold! The Roland Jazz Chorus is heavier then my car, but produces the best guitar chorus sound, this side of heaven.

It has such a full sound, that only other amp. I’ve tried, that really gives it a run for it’s money, is a Yamaha Leslie. Check out the link, it is so wild. The speakers actually swirl around giving it the ultimate chorus effect.

If you’ve even went to a church with a organ in it, and you saw a BIG BOX beside it, it probably was a Leslie Speaker amp. So if the opportunity presents itself, go back and ask the organist to show you how it works! Tony F, from my old band Pylis, had one and he said why don’t you hook your guitar to it and when I did, it was the best chorus I’ve ever heard. You can also control the speed of the speakers spinning.

The E-bow that Chris uses is something that has been around for years, but I have never known anyone to have used it. The link that I have attached to it, shows the diversity of this product. Next time I’m in my favorite guitar store, The 12th Fret, I’ll definitely try it out!

Counterpoint at the 2008 Nuance show

CounterPoint is the band that impressed me, and I’m sure everyone else, the most at this years show. The brilliant musical virtuosos of each member was breath taking to hear. If I were to see them again at any other time in the future, then I’d be the first one in line!

The band consists of keyboardist Rick Kazmirchuk, bass player Chris Noto and drummer Joe Pawlowski.

The keyboardist Rick Kazmirchuk was playing on a Roland D-70, a Yamaha EX5 and a Proteus 9030 EMU. Great looking and sounding like a million bucks.

The eye catching one on the stage for me was Chris Noto! I closed my eyes and it might as well have been Chris Squire up there playing with the band, no kidding! He had a classic Black Rickenbacker bass, playing through another classic blast from the past, a punchy Ampeg bass amp head. Sorry, but I didn’t get a look at his cabinet. I was too busy watching him play. He alternated from a pick (which I did not ask which one he used) to plain finger playing.

Joe Pawlowski was the man behind the kit! He was using the drums that everyone was using, but too bad that he wasn’t on his own kit. He sounded and looked comfortable on this communal kit. He brought along with him, his gorgeous looking bronze 6 1/2 inch Ludwig, John Bonham special snare. It honestly was nice to look at and I’m not a drummer! There was one thing that caught my eye about his sound, it was that he wasn’t using the chains on his snare. I asked Joe after the show about this and he said that he like the sound and the feel of it, humm.

So if these guys are playing in your area, it is most to go and see them! It is a huge bargain for any price that you will pay at the door!

Nuance Festival was a Massive success

As I wake up from my delightful and delirious musical hangover, I proudly proclaim this years 2008 Nuance Art Rock Festival a MASSIVE SUCCESS (and that is putting it lightly, to say the least!).

The attendance numbers at this years Nuance Festival was about 23,367 … or was that the number of Tylenol’s that I took this morning. Either or, the attendance was not bad considering Steve Howe was playing in Toronto that night. Too bad the organizers could fit him into their line up.

The show is about the coming together and celebrating, as a Prog./Art community, the love of this long forgotten genre of musical alchemy. It showcased some of Canada’s hidden music … Ark of the Covenant like, Progressive Rock giants that still proudly walk amongst mere mortals.

Nuance is the Ark of the Covenant of all musical Festivals!

As I sat there front row center, I was continuously blown away, act after act. I was scribing notes about every little nuance of this communal way of life, and there was lots to write about.

It started off with the perfect emcee to host such an event, the legendary Spaceman Stan! Even this informative and genial host keep you wanting more. Did you know that this local Hall was named after the birth place of none other then Keith Emerson? The organizer Wilton Said sure did his homework!

The line up was immaculate. I can honestly say that for the life of me, or the fate of the western world in general for that matter, could not have pick a better set of bands that truly represented this lost way of life.

LorneHind360 was a fabulous opening act. This guy I couldn’t get enough of. Who the hell needs Jeff Beck when we have Lorne!

Then came, what seemed to be like deep out of the earths musical mantel, Counterpoint. Thanks guys, I couldn’t get Ritual out of my head all night! I think I slept for about maybe 2-3 hours tops! Think about that Youtube video on my original Nuance post, but on speed! Go to the counter number 01:13 – 01:27, that is the type of tunes that they guys were inflicting upon us all evening. It was running around in my head like a freight train all night! These guy are that good. As a young lady whispered into my ear last night “this is the CounterPoint of Cerafim“.

Then came Wilton Said. As my good readership is well a-where-of, I’m honestly not that into lyrics. So here enters Wilton. He and his mates made me physically sit back in my seat and think about what he was talking about, yes my wife, you heard me correctly. As I said, no pun intended, throughout the night, I was writing down anything and everything that entered my mind while taking in the bands. I was aware of how they effected me as a musician and an avid lover of this genre. The only way to express how I feel about this musical encounter is to say … get up off your ass and go see this guy live! Then, maybe you can help me put into words what it is like to be “Said experienced!”

Then to round out a perfect night, Nuanced unleashed The Rebel Wheel. These guys couldn’t play second fiddle to anyone even if they tried… because of the talent that was amassed on stage right in front of us.

As the posts on my blog progress, I will bring a blow by blow of each band on what they played, how it was played in great detail and what they were playing with.

So if you can, try to get advance tickets for next years 2009 Nuance Art Rock Festival. A strict wrist band will be in effect at next years show, so book ahead! First 1000 to show up at the door will get in free admission, I think … don’t quote me.
